THE June Criminal Sessions were officially closed on Wednesday with the presentation of the Jail Delivery from Senior Supt. of Prisons, Mr. T. Small. The report was received by Justice Roxanne George.
According to Mr. Small, in his report to the Judge, 133 prisoners are at the Georgetown Prisons, awaiting trial for various offences.
Sixteen of them have requested early trial. Two of the 16 – Peter Kassim and Satanand Sahadeo – who were promised by Justice George at the last sessions that they would have been tried at the October Sessions, will no longer be tried in October.
They were brought back to Court and told, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) had directed that their P. I. should be continued with the taking of fresh evidence, and as such the promise for trial in October could not be kept.
Of the 133 awaiting trial, 102 including 6 females are for murder; attempted murder – 4; manslaughter – 3, including one female; carnal knowledge – 21; incest -2; and arson -1.
