AMAZON Caribbean Guyana Ltd (AMCAR) has acquired the International Food Standard (IFS) certification to lead the way in agro-processing standards in this country.
Its three factories, at Barima River in North West District, Rosignol, West Coast Berbice and Mainstay, Essequibo Coast, where the company processes certified organic heart of palm and pineapple for export, have been awarded the certificates.
Managing Director and new AMCAR owner, Mr. Christophe Sureau said: “We are exceptionally pleased with this high level certification and look forward to the increased opportunities it will bring to the company, while recognising Guyana as a safety and attractive investment country.”
He said it is the second significant benchmark for them, following organic certification.
“Both, together, constitute a very important signal to our customers that AMCAR is committed to ensuring its products meet the highest standards for a sustainable environment. Our activity is proof of sustainable development within Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS),” Sureau.
In a release, AMCAR said the world’s highest certification for the food industry was recently awarded, by the IFS, to all of its facilities after an intensive audit of its certified organic heart of palm and pineapple processes was done.
“The results show that, across all product lines, the company fulfills the IFS strict criteria regarding product hygiene, safety and quality,” it said.
AMCAR is the first and currently the only local enterprise to be so awarded in the food industry and said it is even more necessary for agro-processors which export on the international market.
This status, which is recognised by Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), sets AMCAR apart from its direct competitors who have yet to achieve such an accreditation, the release said.
It added that this most significant accomplishment will provide the company’s existing and prospective customers with the added assurance that all of its products are of the highest quality and are processed in top class facilities, ensuring best results.
The statement said AMCAR is willing to reinforce and promote organic agricultural development in Guyana by using its knowledge to service the public and private sectors.
“We believe Guyana remains a very high potential in terms of food processing and exporting in respect to the environment,” it concluded.
