Magistrate blames alcohol mainly for domestic violence

Jailing wife abuser…
MAGISTRATE Tejnarine Ramroop said, Wednesday, that alcohol is one of the main motivating factors that fuel domestic violence.
Speaking at Albion Court, Corentyne, Berbice, he said the substance would, often times, lead to murder.

His Worship made the observation before he sentenced Ravie Persaud, of Hampshire, Corentyne, to three months imprisonment for assaulting his wife, Kamla.
The prisoner pleaded guilty to the offence and Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said the man was previously charged with a similar offence, also committed on his wife of 12 years, for which he was put on a bond to keep the peace for six months.
“You have not learnt your lesson, which you have blamed on alcohol. I have no alternative but to impose the sentence sanctioned by law,” the magistrate told the convict.
The Prosecutor related that, on September 18, at about 17:00h, the virtual complainant was at home sharing a light conversation with the family when her husband, in a drunken stupor, accused her of being unfaithful.
An argument ensued between the husband and wife and he dealt her several blows to the forehead, the Court heard.
