YES it’s back to school for all of us who are studying once again. Right now university students of Guyana are in their fourth week of studies already while secondary schools are in their third. It seems as if school started only yesterday and the time has been flying so rapidly that you can’t even feel when the sunsets and when the crack of dawn appears the next day.
The reason why I am writing this article is not for fun but for advice to everyone attending school and for them to have a brighter perception about school life, what they are headed for and what they should plan to do in order to make way to a reluctant future. I really love school. It’s been my favourite thing all of my life, to go and learn and interact with classmates and friends. School should never be boring for any child or adult. It is a way of keeping the brain active, learning more everyday and encouraging your friends with you to stay in school and form groups to interact positively with school studies. Also the more you read the more you know, a common saying that has been passed on to generations. When attending University of Guyana most of my Public Management lecturers tell our class that: “You are reading for your degree.” That is the essential reason why our lecturers encourage us to read books from the library and also the newspapers are very good to keep track of the daily news, what is occurring in the country with public sector, private sector, developments in areas, new businesses, downfalls, progress, crime, ongoing issues, weather and climate change, world news feedbacks columnist articles and numerous kind of great reading material you can find from newspapers that make our lecturers stress on us to read them more regularly. I always read the newspapers since it is a vital source of information and my father always reminds me to read the newspapers so that you will learn more and become a more educated person.
It is time now for me in this article to stress on the importance of education and why students should take it seriously. Twice, in my life I did not take schooling seriously like when writing CXC exams I was this childish playful kid that wrote exams and had to rewrite in order to attend the University of Guyana, Berbice Campus, a place I always use to pass by when I was younger on a trip with the family to New Amsterdam. I would just pass by with the driving vehicle and just stare at the campus hoping and praying to attend it one sweet day. My mother always use to notice and inspire me by saying, “You want to go there really badly don’t you? In time you will get to go one day. Don’t worry.” So I wrote my exams and got through and attended my first year at university but I became lackadaisical with my studies following up dressing, make up, my appearance, boyfriends and luxury life. I was like a “tar girl” and being caught up with material things that don’t mean a thing to me anymore. It happens when people go through a financial strain, they learn the importance of money and the money well spent with their education that would actually make them concentrate on their schooling more seriously. So I had to pay for the mistakes I made in my second year at university and oh boy did I pay for those ones! It was a rough year for me correcting the mistakes I made in life. I took off a year and now I am in my third year at University. I always believe that if you feel that you are not ready or capable for something do not allow the forces from people pressure you to do something your not quite ready for. Well now I am in my third year at UGBC and in my fouth week of studies and I feel good so far because I have been studying, completing my research assignments before time, and preparing for tests well in advance. I believe and know this time I can do it and do it my way in a better and productive manner. It’s like the Waka Waka African song that everyone mostly has been listening to when the popular artist went to South Africa and sang the song for the world cup soccer: “You pave the way, you feel it. You make the way, believe it. You fall down get up, oh, oh. You fall down get up hey, hey…” And also another part goes like: “The pressures on you feel it, you got to go and receive it! These motivating and inspiring words that Shakira sings melodiously to us motivates us to get what you really want even though you might reach downfalls in life, just pick up yourself brush off your knees and continue to run your race of excellence to reach the goal or pinnacle of success. It is from mistakes in life that you learn from them and try not to make the same ones again but heal your wounds and go on with life again, pushing your way to success because no one is going to put you there you got to do it yourself. I just want to say going to school is going to learn the golden rule.
Everyone should stay focus by not looking at what others have, boyfriends and girlfriends can come later when you’re professional in life because I see them as a distraction, don’t allow tedious problems to bother you and become a victim of peer pressure. Be yourself by studying hard and sketching out your goals you want to achieve in this life. Remember we only have one life, one race to run so do your best. There isn’t going to be next time. At last I must conclude and say students, stay focus, eat quality nutritious foods, study, have a social life as well because we don’t want to overtax the brain, but just know what your doing and what you want if you would like to have a grand professional life in the bright future ahead. Prepare for it!
