Policeman among six suspects in custody
– four newly purchased motor cars, one All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) , quantity of electrical home appliances seized
– firearm recovered
POLICE have so far arrested six persons and seized four newly purchased motor cars, one All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and a quantity of electrical home appliances, as they intensify investigations into the recent double murder and multi-million-dollar robbery at Bartica. The Police, in a statement late yesterday, said “diligent enquiries have led to the arrest of multiple suspects and seizure of vehicles”.
Acting on information received, the Police said “a composite team of sleuths” from the Criminal Investigation Department, on Wednesday, arrested five suspects, seized four motor cars, one ATV and a quantity of electrical home appliances.
Yesterday, another suspect was handed over to the Police by his lawyer. The Police also indicated that they have recovered the firearm belonging to Ricky Ramnarine – the owner of the building in Bartica where gold dealers Ramdeo Deonarine, of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo and Jainarine Raghubar, of Fairfield, Essequibo Coast were brutally killed.
The victims died from injuries inflicted on them in a building – owned by Ramnarine – where they, usually, conduct business in the village and a large quantity of gold and millions of dollars in cash were stolen from them.
The Police are also currently searching for “one other suspect who may be involved in the committal of the offence”.
It was also confirmed that the suspects detained “include a policeman who may have compromised himself”.
The cars seized were among several believed to have been bought with the proceeds from the sale of the stolen booty.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the policeman detained was off duty at the time of the murders and, subsequently, contacted the alleged perpetrators and extorted, from them, one car and cash in exchange for not reporting what they had done.
Other reports are that the Police are also trying to determine which of the suspects gave, as his name to the Parika-Bartica passenger registry and a Bartica hotel, one similar to that of a senior member of the Judiciary.
Investigators took possession of bills for the Bartica hotel, some diamonds and Barbadian and American currency in a room at a lower East Coast Demerara hotel.
The Police said charges will be instituted shortly as investigations are continuing.
