Minister Manickchand meets Justice Lucky

MINISTER of Human Services and Social Security Ms. Priya Manickchand, on Friday last, called for members of the judiciary to ‘embrace the changes in the Sexual Offences Act 2010’ after a meeting  with visiting Trinidadian Jurist,  Justice Gillian Lucky. Justice Lucky, a sitting Judge in the High Court of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is in Guyana to conduct a workshop with Magistrates. The workshop is part of the preparation of the judiciary for handling cases under the recently enacted Sexual Offences legislation.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Manickchand said that “we are privileged to have someone of Justice Lucky’s calibre, participating in our activities for readiness for handling sexual offences going forward.”
She added that “the new legislation contains significant protections and provisions for the vulnerable but does this through new procedures that require careful examination and a high level of training that ensures that the protections are delivered in the courts.”
The magistrates’ workshop is the first in a series of workshops for members of the judiciary, DPP Chambers, and police prosecutors to be held between September and November.
These workshops are being organised by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security with support from UNICEF.
