CLIVE Smith, 34, of Lot 22 Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, was yesterday ordered, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, to post $300,000 bail on a fraudulent conversion charge. Particulars of the offence said, on June 16, being solely entrusted with one ‘Toyota IST’ number PMM 3864 valued $2.5M, to operate and return the proceeds, he fraudulently converted, to his own use and benefit, the vehicle belonging to Mohamed Ali.
The defendant pleaded not guilty and the case was transferred to another Court for October 28.
Defence Counsel Patrice Henry said Smith was working with the virtual complainant as a taxi driver and was a robbery victim from whom the vehicle was stolen.
Ali claimed he gave the defendant the vehicle to park at a car wash but the latter drove away with it.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, did not object to the bail grant.
