THE Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized a quantity of uncustomed goods and goods that were under-invoiced in Georgetown, Mahaicony and Annandale.
The seizure, which took place on August 26 and 27, included eighty six and one half (86 ½) cases of Lizi Pai mosquito coil which were seized from a Robb Street Lacytown location and another eight cases of coil which were intercepted and seized at Annandale, East Coast Demerara. The importation of mosquito coils is restricted due to the nature of the chemicals they contain.
Over this two-day period, LEID also intercepted fifteen 45-gallon drums of lube oil, 21 cases of Sting, four cases of Unoli cooking oil, and five cases of V8 juice.
Officials of the Department also detained an importer who tried to evade tax on 2,200 bags of potatoes imported from Holland that had been under valued, by submitting an invoice that did not reflect the true value of the item.
Due to the perishable nature of this item, the importer agreed to pay the difference in duties and taxes which amounted to over $700,000 and the goods were subsequently released.
The Law Enforcement and Investigation Division of the GRA is mandated to enforce the collection of revenue and is legally allowed to conduct investigations and seizures where there is suspicion of evasion of taxes. Persons are encouraged to report any illegal activity that can compromise revenue collection to the GRA’s intelligence hotline number 226-6687.
