A police source has revealed that law enforcement officials were following a trail that led to Mark Benschop in their pursuit of wanted man Tyrone ‘Cobra’ Rowe.
Information reaching this newspaper revealed that Benschop, along with several overseas based Guyanese, had built a network of criminals that included Cobra in preparation for a 2011 elections terror campaign and law enforcement officials were about to crack the case. It was said that the group received overseas funding and that it had engagements with Benschop. The group is said to include Ministry of Health arson accused, Kurt Thierens called ‘Glasses’ and several other criminals.
According to unconfirmed reports, persons in the Crane area also reported seeing Benschop visiting Cobra in the abandoned house he then occupied.
The Police came up empty handed after they searched the said house looking for Cobra. The wanted man’s girlfriend is believed to have told Police during questioning that he received funds from external sources on more than one occasion.
‘Cobra’, one of Guyana most wanted fugitives, turned himself in to law enforcement authorities on Thursday, almost four months after a wanted bulletin was issued for him by the Police.
‘Cobra’ and his gang is said to have terrorized, robbed and in some cases raped in a crime spree that rocked the Albouystown and South Georgetown areas.
Both the Stabroek News and Kaieteur News reported that Cobra contacted Benschop whilst in hiding and arranged for his surrender. Sources say what stands out though is Mark Benschop’s ability to make contact with wanted fugitives. It can be recalled that it was Benschop who made the infamous ‘Freedom Fighter’ tape of the notorious wanted man Andrew Douglas.
Questions surround Benschop's involvement in surrender of wanted man Cobra
