General Marine Master Cup and Female Softball begins Sept. 12

THE regular Over-40 competition called the Master Cup and Female Softball Cricket Competition has become a reality in the last few years mainly due to the initiative of the Guyana Floodlights Cricket Association (GFCA). The GFCA has done many fundraising activities throughout the country, has raised millions of dollars for various organisations and is also the only softball body which has sent teams for the last three years at the World Premier Softball event, known as the ‘Florida Cup’ in the USA.
The first Master Cup and Female Softball Competition was sponsored by Mike’s Pharmacy, while the second by 4R is on hold at the quarter-final stage due to pending clarification with a team making its first participation in the Master Cup.
However, the game of softball cricket, the Master Cup and Female Softball competition, will go on despite this.
The GFCA is now embarking on the third such tournament which starts next Sunday Sept 12 at various venues throughout the country This third tournament is being sponsored by Kubota Industrial Generators and Engines and Tohatsu Outboards.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar was present at the launching. He congratulated the GFCA for taking up the initiative, thanked the sponsor, and is willing to give support in any way from a government point of view. Kumar also proposed to the GFCA to get involved in a festive softball tournament, of teams from all over the country to play at the national stadium.
Entrance fee for this Master Cup 25-over softball tournament is $5 000, while the female 10/10 softball is $2 500. Both winning teams will receive a huge trophy with $50 000 in cash, while the runner-up teams will receive trophy and $25 000 cash. There will also be trophies for various excellent performances throughout the competitions.
In an effort to standardise balls, teams are asked to use the yellow ‘Supreme Floodlights’ ball.
