$9M excavation project to open more fertile lands

THE Government of Guyana, through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and the Regional Administration of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), is currently excavating several drainage canals on the Essequibo Coast. The work is being done on the right bank of Supenaam Creek to make thousands more acres of fertile virgin farmlands available.
NDIA Engineer Permansingh said 25 per cent of the $9M job has been completed and, when the entire project is finished, 33 cash crop farmers will benefit.
The contract for desilting the waterways was signed between the Government and contractor Kaydar Persaud, of Affiance, also on the Essequibo Coast.
Farmers, over the years, have suffered from improper drainage and flooding on many occasions during the rainy season but many who abandoned their cultivations are now rushing back to them. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
