Fire destroys building, motorbikes

A fire last evening completely destroyed a property at 197 Quamina Street in the city and damaged beyond repair a large number of motorcycles housed at the location. Occupant of the property and motorcycle mechanic Brian La Fleur was later taken away in a police vehicle.
According to persons near the scene, the fire started shortly before 21:00h.

Up to news time, officers of the Guyana Fire Service were battling to extinguish the still burning building.
Many persons who had their motorcycles on the scene turned up sadly to find a row of bikes parked outside the building and more in the compound completely destroyed.

One woman in a forlorn manner told Guyana Chronicle that she had more than one bike in the building. She said however that she had insurance coverage for them. A car was eventually rolled out of the compound and it was heavily scorched.
According to reports, about five persons lived in the building. There were reports of children in the building at the time that the fire broke out, but this could not be confirmed up to press time.
