THE Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) has said it will sponsor this country’s 42-member contingent which is inclusive of athletes and officials to the upcoming XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi , India from October 3-14 2010. President of the GOA and attorney-at law K. Juman-Yassin during a press conference held at the Olympic House, High Street last Saturday called on the Government of Guyana to throw their support into this venture.
While stating the GOA had whittled down the lists of athletes received from the respective associations to the final number which includes athletes and officials, Juman-Yassin said there were still a few fine tuning arrangements being conducted by some of the associations.
The GOA head affirmed that assistance from the government has not been forthcoming for the longest while and stated that this situation has not been resting nicely with the GOA or any of the other associations in Guyana .
According to Juman-Yassin, the present list excludes a number of athletes who can still attend the games only if they are willing and prepared to pay their own way and the GOA was willing to have those athletes accredited.
The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has the largest contingent of athletes and officials (16) attending the games, while swimmer Jessica Simpson and an accompanying official is the smallest contingent on the Guyana squad.
Ransford Goodluck and Mahendra Persaud are the rifle shooters while Nicolette Fernandes and Ashley Khalil are the squash representatives, with Idi Lewis, Paul David, Christopher Franklin and Edinho Lewis representing the table tennis fraternity.
Boxers Clevon Rock, Dexter Jordan and Devon Boatswain will represent Guyana in that discipline, while Central American and Caribbean Games bronze medalist Ray Sandiford was omitted for disciplinary reasons.
Top cyclists Alonzo Greaves, Geron Williams, Marlon Williams, Enzo Mathews, Claire Fraser and Sean Green have been included in the team and they will be managed by William Howard, with Mathews, Fraser and Green paying their own fares to the Games.
Aliann Pompey, Guyana’s long distance king Cleveland Forde and USA based Olympian Adam Harris have been selected by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), whose president Colin Boyce will act n the capacity of manager.
Garfield Wiltshire has been appointed chef-de-mission of the squad drawn from eight sports discipline attached to the GOA , with each association being asked to pay US$255 per athlete and US$305 per official.
