THE Craig/Good Success NDC last Thursday embarked on a dengue sensitisation campaign which included distribution of insecticide and flyers outlining preventative measures that can also be used to minimise the spread of the dengue fever.
According to Environmental Health Officer, Steve Chechester Abate Sandy Granules is the most insecticide in preventing the spread of dengue fever carrying the mosquito. He said this insecticide will be distributed to residents from Good Success and Caledonia to prevent mosquito from breeding in their yards.
Chichester explained that while the flyers distributed would provide other methods for prevention the Abate insecticide is provided so that it could deal primarily with the breeding ground of the mosquito. He said he deemed this necessary because many residences would have water stored in plant pots, vats, buckets and other containers.
He said with the help of the Ministry of Health they were able to acquire numerous preventative methods in dealing with the outbreak and with accurate and effective use of this insecticide the larvae of the AEDES AEGYPTI MOSQUITO, which aids in the spread of dengue fever, could be eradicated.
Chichester recommended that residents in other areas across the country follow the preventative methods as well which include the burying of all cans, bottles, plastic containers, and old tyres; turning over buckets, wheelbarrows; keeping garbage containers covered; changing water in potted plants at least once a week; shaking out covering materials, e.g. tarpaulin; weeding all bushy areas in and around the yard; draining off/building up swampy patches around the yard; carrying out your own yard inspections at least once per month; and reporting all malfunctioning culverts/draining areas and stagnant water problems sites to the NDC.
Dwarka Nath the Chairman of the NDC Said that this initiative was brought about to deal with the spread of the dengue fever, he said however, they are also planning to accumulate waste oil to use in latrine toilets to deal directly with the breeding of mosquitoes as well.
Nath said at this point they are just at the initial stage in the distribution, so they may not be able to have an adequate amount of workers in the field, but it is hoped that other NDC’s across the country will also take the initiative in educating the residents of Guyana.
The Chairman said he is urging all residents to take a serious note of the preventative measures since to help prevent any contraction of the disease. Nath said residents should wear proper clothing, avoid mosquito prone areas, and make good use of mosquito repellants.
Some residents in the area expressed their gratitude to the NDC for distributing the insecticide and pledged to play their part in minimising the outbreak of this disease.
