Gas station owner on fraud charge

GANGADEEN Shridat, owner of a gas station at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, appeared last Wednesday in court charged with obtaining gasoline under false pretense.
Shridat, 38, of 199 Seventh Street, Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to three charges before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton.

It is alleged that on, August 4, he obtained $3.4M and $2.5M worth of gasoline and gas oil from Guyoil Gas Station, at Providence, East Bank Demerara, by falsely pretending to Lloyd Mangra that he had the money to pay in an account at Citizens Bank.
Shridat was also accused of obtaining $7.4M in gasoline and gas oil from the same service station on August 5 last.
Attorney-at-Law Hukumchand appeared for Shridat, and in an application for bail, told the court that his client genuinely believed that he had the money in his account to make the payment.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, requested that the matter be sent back to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further advice.
Shridat was allowed $150,000 bail and will return to court on September 22.
