THE Queenstown-based Demerara Cricket Club’s (DCC) inaugural summer camp culminates today with a simple ceremony at the club’s pavilion commencing 13:00 h, where the participants will be issued with certificates of participation.
Both president of the club Alfred Mentore and coach Gavin Nedd expressed their satisfaction at the response given to the two-week programme by the cricketers and their parents.
“I was taken aback by the response given to this programme when we started two weeks ago. The response from both the players and their parents was heartening and I would like to thank the president of the club for entrusting his confidence in me to conduct this programme and certainly I will be looking forward to next year’s programme,” stated Nedd.
During the two-week programme, those who attended, including members of Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO), were taught the basic and fundamental aspects of the gentleman’s game.
According to Nedd, the over 59 students including one female at the camp were not exposed to batting, bowling and fielding drills alone, as they were given the opportunity to exhibit their ability to understand the basics of the game.
At yesterday’s session, umpire and part-time commentator Matthew Kissoon took the participants through some of the basic rules of the game, including the number of ways a batsman can be given out, as well as some of the duties of an umpire.
At today’s ceremony, Guyana and West Indies opener Travis Dowlin, along with his national teammates in all-rounder Christopher Barnwell and Derwin Christian who are all members of DCC, is expected to have a 30-minute rapport with the participants of the camp.
