He chopped her several times with a cutlass and drank gramoxone
A 46-year-old Mon Repos businessman is now dead, and his wife remained in a critical condition in the Instensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) last night after he went berserk and chopped her several times with a cutlass before ingesting a lethal dose of gramoxone. Dead is Subash Mohabir, proprietor of the Mon Repos Green Ice Poultry Farm, East Coast Demerara. He died around 17:00 hrs, even as doctors were in the theatre battling to save the life of his wife Latchmin.
In the midst of the attack, the unannounced visit of the wounded woman’s elder brother, Seeraj Singh, saved her from being chopped to death on the spot, and perhaps saved the lives of their two daughters, 13, and 7, Seeraj said.
Seeraj recalled he arrived at the Mohabirs’ home just before 10:00 hrs to check on them, and as he reached the gate, heard his sister screaming for ‘blue murder’. He said he impulsively ran into the yard towards where the sound was coming from, only to see her, covered with blood, and struggling towards a nearby empty lot, pursued by her husband armed with a cutlass. As she reached the lot she slumped to the ground.
The aggressor, on seeing his brother-in-law Seeraj, fled, leaving his wife bleeding on the ground. Meanwhile, their two daughters who had witnessed the entire episode, screamed hysterically.
Seeraj said he quickly flagged a passing taxi and placed his badly chopped and bleeding sister into it, then sped off with her to the hospital. As they were about to leave, he recalled that the aggressor, who was pulled from his place of hiding, by his brother, pulled out a white plastic bottle and hurriedly ingested a substance from it. Simultaneously, the Beterverwagting Police who had been summoned, made an appearance and rushed the man to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He was given emergency treatment, but died about seven hours later.
The distraught Seeraj recalled that his brother-in-law Mohabir began behaving strangely about a month ago, when he first began brutalizing his wife.
On Monday, he recalled, Mohabir disappeared from the home, without relatives knowing of his whereabouts. He appeared the following day and told his wife and daughters to get dressed; he was taking them to the bank to effect some changes to their joint savings account. However, while they were in the bank, the man apparently ‘tripped;’ and ran out of the building, leaving them behind. They never saw him again until early yesterday morning when he showed up at his home.
His daughters said that that around 9:00 he walked through the gate and told his wife that he had spent the night at another brother at Sara Drive Mon Repos, but that he had come home to stay on this occasion. Minutes later, a customer came along to purchase eggs, and as his wife was selling the customer, Mohabir began to act strangely.
She told him that she had no greens in the home and asked him to go get some for her to cook. That request triggered something, the girls recalled, and their father rudely snapped at his wife: “What greens?” At that, he whisked out a knife and stabbed her on the elbow. On seeing the blood, he went berserk and attacked her with a cutlass. The woman received about seven or eight cutlass wounds, relatives said.
She was admitted to theatre around 11:00 hrs, and late yesterday afternoon she was still being operated on. Meanwhile, relatives and friends remained outside the theatre hoping and praying for the best.
