Jawalla, Waramadong, Kako receive school uniform materials

Schools in hinterland communities, like many others across the country, are receiving school uniform materials for nursery, primary and secondary levels, as promised by Government in its effort to ensure every child attains formal education. Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai and team, including Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Amerindian Affairs and Region Seven Chairman Holbert Knight, recently handed over the first batch of uniform material to Jawalla, Waramadong and Kako, Upper Mazaruni.
In addition to the fabric, other items including thread, buttons, scissors, and zips have been provided for the tailoring of the uniforms. Minister Sukhai noted that the individuals involved in making the uniforms will be given a stipend.
The School Uniform Distribution Programme was introduced by President Bharrat Jagdeo in 2003 to boost school attendance, especially in rural, riverine and hinterland areas.
In 2009, $55M was dedicated towards this programme to benefit over 36,000 children.
President Bharrat Jagdeo, in his 2010 Independence Day message, had indicated that Government would spend $1.1B this year to ensure every child receives a uniform and basic meals. (GINA)
