Guard charged for assaulting wife who ‘can’t keep her hands to her sides’

A security guard attached to a popular city establishment was granted bail yesterday by Magistrate Haymant Ramghani after he was brought before him to answer an assault charge at the Vigilance Magistrate’s court. It is alleged that Winston Haynes, of 143 South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, assaulted his reputed wife last Wednesday in the vicinity of Thomas Lands, Georgetown.
The court heard that on that day, Haynes and his reputed wife, Roxanne Reid, were engaged in a physical confrontation when both parties chucked and slapped at each other. A report was made and Haynes was subsequently arrested and charged with the offence.
The 43-year-old father of one explained to the court that on the day in question, he and his reputed wife had an argument on the road which resulted in her delivering the first blow. He then reacted and hit her back. Haynes further explained that it is habitual for his wife to hit him first, since she has a practice of not keeping her hands to her sides.
He added that on this occasion, she became annoyed when he retaliated and
made a report against him, allegedly on the advice of her sibling.
After listening to the man’s story, the magistrate entered a not guilty plea and placed Haynes on $10,000 bail.
