THE President and Executive Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) would like to express heartfelt congratulations to the management and members of the Guyana Twenty20 cricket team on their achievement of being crowned champions of the WICB-organised Caribbean T20 tournament. The BCB is very proud of the achievement of the entire team and salutes the winning of the championship as a result of team unity, hard work and visionary planning.
The team’s achievement could not have come at a better time as Guyana ‘s cricket is in urgent need of good news and the championship victory is nothing more than a feeling of good news among a sea of bad ones, on and off the cricket field.
This victory, however, should not be viewed as a turning point in Guyana ‘s fortune as a cricketing force as there are still many problems affecting our cricket.
T20 cricket is neither 50 overs nor first class cricket and as our performance in the 2010 Under-19 tournament would show, we have a long way to go before we can safely say that we have turned the corner.
The Guyana Cricket Board, county boards and clubs in Guyana should use this success as a springboard to redouble their efforts and work harder with the sole purpose of developing the game and its players to an all-time high standard.
Failure to do so would result in our cricket returning to one failure after the next, as was seen after the Stanford 20/20 Championship win back in 2006.
The manager Carl Moore, coach Ravindranauth Seeram, captain Ramnaresh Sarwan and the players should be proud of their achievement and the BCB would like to encourage them to always remember in the future the same formula of success that was used.
We wish them all the best in the upcoming Champion League in South Africa and would like to urge them to be proper role models for our country on and off the cricket field.
Good performances on the field would be welcome but what is most important is how the team represents Guyana on the international stage in terms of discipline, attitude and commitment.
The BCB would like to publicly salute the seven Berbicians on the team who all in someway contributed to the team’s success but would like to specially mention Devendra Bishoo and Jonathan Foo for their outstanding personal performances.
We at the BCB are not surprised at the performances of our boys because like their performances in the Digicel and DJ Stress 20/20 tournaments show, every senior Berbice player is physically and mentally prepared to perform due to the numerous programmes of the BCB, especially the highly successful senior elite training programme.
Foo and Bishoo are just two of a rich pool of exciting talent in Berbice and many others would soon follow in their footsteps. Special mention must also be made of the Albion Cricket Club and the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club who together produced seven players who were a part of the team.
