Barbados, Guyana name drivers for Caribbean championship

GUYANA and Barbados have released the names of the drivers and riders who will be representing the two countries in the second round of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championships on August 28-29 at the Bushy Park race track in Barbados. Veteran ace driver Andrew King, Paul Vieira, Kevin Jeffrey and Shawn King will be Guyana’s representatives for the CMRC while Barbados will turn to their record holders Stuart Williams and Roger Mayers along with Mark Maloney and Doug Maloney.
The CMRC second round which will be held on the Digicel/Williams International race meet will also see Guyana being represented in the mini championship by local group 2A driver Jad Rahaman.
Group 2B drivers Danny Persaud and Afraz Ali will also be making the journey to the land of the flying fish to participate in the local meet.
In the Super Bike category, Canada-based speedster Kevin Graham will form alliance with Guyana’s ‘Valentino Rossi’ Stephen Vieira, Maurice Meneze and Kamadeo Rajkumar as they attempt to take Barbados by storm.
As it relates to the CMRC, Guyana for the first time leads the Country standing after a good showing in the first round held at Dover Raceway in Jamaica with its representatives (Mark and Paul Vieira, King and Jeffrey) performing creditably well.
However, of the four who went to Jamaica, Mark Vieira and his Digicel/Shell-V Power-sponsored Mazda RX8 would not be heading to Barbados.
Vieira (Mark) has been in worries with his machine ever since he acquired it but in Jamaica he raced the machine to a 5th, 6th and a third place finish in his three races in the CMRC first round.
Meanwhile, the Barbados Racing League (BRL) is optimistic that the selected drivers for the championships will certainly perform well at home with Roger Mayers, the man whom many consider to have the car to win in the Caribbean, making it clear that the Bajans are coming hard to make a statement, adding that the competition will be tough.
“This year looks set to be even more interesting, with Guyana leading the Country Championship for the first time, and well done to them for an excellent result in Jamaica. I believe Bushy Park will be the turning point for this year’s CMRC and an event fans just won’t want to miss,” Mayers stated in a press release sent by the BRL.
According to the release, for 2010, the points-scoring system in the CMRC has been changed.
It states that drivers score points within the two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive category with ten points being awarded for a win, eight for second place, six for third and a point will each go to drivers down to eighth place.
The change in format, the release pointed out, will not change the fact that there will be only one Caribbean Champion. The driver who scores the highest number of points from the three rounds (Jamaica, Barbados and Guyana) will be adjudged the over-all winner.
