Drivers of vehicles on the Essequibo Coast are calling on the Ministry of Public Works to construct new bridges at Hampton Court and La Resource.
Some drivers told the Guyana Chronicle that the bridges which connect the public road over drainage canals in the two areas are beyond repair and should be replaced by concrete bridges as early as possible.
According to the drivers, several planks on the decking of the bridges are missing and exposed spikes are damaging tyres.
The drivers also said the bridges are very difficult to cross at night especially when the rain is falling.
The bridges on the Essequibo Coast public road are the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Works and Hydraulics. However, the Region Two Administration has done rehabilitation work on the two bridges several times.
Tenders inviting contractors to bid for the construction of the two bridges were advertised in the newspapers some months ago, but nothing has happened so far.
The Government has already constructed concrete bridges at Walton Hall, Devonshire Castle, Dartmouth, Marias’ Delight and Somerset and Berks to link the public road over drainage canals.
