TAFFIN Khan and Cecil Cox played undefeated to capture their respective divisions in the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF)-organized Apex Insurance-sponsored rapid chess tournament which was played last Saturday at the Keishar’s Sports Club. Khan secured the maximum of seven points from seven games, leaving Leerier Webster who finished with six points from his seven games in second position.
Veteran player and president of the GCF Errol Tiwari took the final podium position with five points from his seven games.
Dennis Dillon, Irshad Mohamad, David Khan, Omar Shariff and Frankie Farley all finished on four points apiece, while Glenford Corlette and Ryan Singh scored three and a half points.
Ronald Roberts had with three points, Haatram Parbat two and a half, Alex Joseph and Christopher Chung two points, and Steven Leung ended on one and a half points.
In the junior section, national junior champion Cecil Cox returned with a bang to secure top honours, playing undefeated, like Khan, to finish with five wins and two draws from his seven games.
Raan Motilall occupied the second position behind Cox, while Rajendra Jetoo who hails from West Demerara, surprised the field to take the third position ahead of Saeed Ali.
The final points standing in the junior category are as follows: Cecil Cox (6 points), Raan Motilall (5½ points), Rajendra Jetoo (5 points), Saeed Ali, Ron Motilall, Suhai Feng, Sham Khan (4 ½ points each), Rashad Hussain, Meikel Mohabir, Jason Barnwell (4 points) and Faraad Baksh (3 ½) while eight other players were tied on three points apiece.
The tournament was organised by the Guyana Chess Federation and sponsored by Apex Insurance Brokers Inc
