Thousands of Guyanese converged on the National Park Sunday when the African Cultural Development Association (ACDA) held its Emancipation Festival 2010 to mark the 176th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. The National Park was dotted with booths that showcased the best in African food, clothing and culture. Bedecked in various African outfits, persons wholeheartedly participated in dancing and drumming and the tasting of the sumptuous delicacies on display.
President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Frank Anthony, City Mayor Hamilton Green and members of the Diplomatic Corps were all part of ACDA’s celebrations that kicked off with the Hello Africa Parade, led by the Majorettes.
Bishop Andrew Irving of IFA’s House of Santeria poured a libation in honour of the ancestral spirits, and called on Guyanese to never forget the sacrifices of those who have gone before.
There was drumming from ACDA’s young Buxton group and the Hebrew Family, as well as dancing from X-Factor, Mocha- Arcadia ACDA group, the Vergenoegen Children’s group and ACDA’s own dance group.
Capoeira from Brazil and Dansa Mandela from Venezuela also thrilled the crowd with thrilling performances.
President Jagdeo toured some of the booths in the park, taking care to talk and be photographed with the many Guyanese eager to see him.
Saturday night, ACDA held its traditional candlelight vigil and libation ceremony in the forecourt of Parliament Buildings, Georgetown, to usher in the observances.
Across Guyana there were several activities for Emancipation, including the traditional soirees in Hopetown, Region Five, and activities in Buxton, Mocha Arcadia, Bagotville, and in various other Regions. (GINA)
