Sentence postponed on confessed stepson killer

At Berbice Assizes…
ALBERT Campbell called Sobers, whose retrial on a murder charge was aborted last week, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, at the Berbice Assizes, yesterday.
However, Justice Brassington Reynolds postponed sentence on him, ordered a probation report into the prisoner’s background and remanded him until August 5.
Campbell admitted that he unlawfully killed his 20-year-old stepson, Travis Cleon Fraser alias ‘Black Boy’ as the victim lay asleep in his Liverpool, Corentyne home, on January 22, 2004.
He had previously been convicted of the capital offence but won the appeal against that conviction and was facing another trial on July 21 when the judge halted the proceedings, because a juror on the panel was facing an indictable charge.
State Prosecutor Dionne Mc Cammon was permitted, by the judge, to accept Campbell’s changed plea after Defence Counsel Charrandas Persaud informed the Court that the man in the dock wanted to adapt that course.
