Road fatality at Mahaicony
A 19-year old motorist was yesterday afternoon killed on the spot and his friend, 20, narrowly escaped death, but suffered a broken leg, when the car in which they were travelling ran off the road at Fairfield Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, and crashed into a fence. Shamal Mohamed, of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, suffered a horrific death. The car crashed into the fence, his body was thrust forward onto a projecting piece of greenheart runner that smashed the windshield and skewered the driver through the chest.
The accident brought to an abrupt end all plans for him and his colleague Assif Mohamed who was with him in the car, to get to New Amsterdam for the Berbice Expo. The dead Shamal was responsible for the operation of the kids’ trampoline and merry-go-round, and had hired Assif to work with him. It was the final day of the four-day Expo which got under way last Friday, and was due to commence at 14:00 h. yesterday.
His friend, Assif Mohamed of 42 Farm Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, suffered a broken right leg, but managed to struggle out of the car and summoned help from persons in a passing motor vehicle. Assif was initially treated at the Mahaicony Hospital, but later transferred to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, and Shamal’s body was taken to the Mahaicony mortuary.
This newspaper understands that the dead man’s parents live overseas.
