REFERENCE is made to a Stabroek News article captioned “PNCR accuses gov’t of uneven Region 10 flood response”.
It is a fact that the state intervened, not only immediately, but comprehensively to the flood situation in that region. And this would have been done along with the Region Ten authorities since they would have known those areas affected most. I have no doubt that critical and decisive aid would have been given to the affected areas. It is a given fact that such emergencies that are now a regular occurrence in the international calendar of natural disasters, do occasion hiccups. But to spout “neglect” of some areas and laying such at the PPP/C administration’s door is utter balderdash. If indeed such were the instance, then, the Region’s Chairman would have been pronouncing publicly, very vocal Lindener as he is, as well as the affected citizens.
Only two weeks ago among the menu of social measures of a massive $300M package designed to resuscitate this once prominent town is a programme for the rehabilitation of 27 roads throughout the region. I am certain that the Linden to Ituni and Linden to Kwakwani roads are going to receive special attention in this recently announced dispensation, since they are major economic facilitators.
It is not difficult to read and understand the anxieties of the opposition PNCR. They sense that the proverbial wolf is at their door, beginning with the reduced vote in this region, a traditional bastion of their support.
They have always been shouting that the PPP/C administration has been neglecting, if not, spiting communities that are perceived non-supporters of the latter. A lie! For even areas of known PPP/C support do complain. But, it is the two Cabinet interventions held in this region, especially the second, held only after two weeks of the first that has set the cat among this opposition party’s pigeons. These two visits were not about “deceiving” the region’s residents, as Lance Carberry has falsely alleged in his canard; rather, it is a genuine desire by this administration to bring much needed improvement, upliftment and hope to Linden and its citizens, after decades of neglect, under the PNC regime.
The PNCR is afraid of losing Linden to the PPP/C at the 2011 elections.
