Housing fraud…

Woman in multi-million dollar scam refused bail
CHANDRAWATTIE Sedhari, the woman at the centre of a multi-million dollars house lots scam, was remanded to prison, on Wednesday, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.

The defendant, 40, of Lot 201 Area ‘B’ Grass Field, Lusignan, faced several counts of obtaining money under false pretence.
She pleaded not guilty to all, which alleged that she and Sofia Khan pretended to be employees of the Housing Ministry and promised the virtual complainants land, between January 20 and March 29, 2010.
The allegations said Sedhari received $5.4M from Hemchand Bibi, Navinda Singh, Jainarine Singh, Vikram Singh, Rohan Secharran, Yogra Sani Ram, Rafeek Hassan, Wasir Khan, Neena Persaud, Didyanand Ramgobin, Ravi Jagdoor, Suraj Lallchan, Jagnarine Badhan, Tejnauth and Omar Das, Bibi Shaneza, Chitrika Seegobin, Alim Razack, Shafeek Toolsie, Bagmat Balgobin, Rehanna Geetu and Darshanie Lallchan.
Attorney-at-law Euclin Gomes, for the Defence, informed the Court that other persons are involved in this matter and asked that Sedhari be put on reasonable bail.
But Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, successfully objected to the grant, on the ground that investigations are continuing.
At his request, the case was transferred to Sparendaam Court, also on East Coast Demerara, for August 30.
