SINCE the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic came into Office in 1992, the life of every Guyanese citizen has changed for the better. Guyanese are now able to access services that once seemed unreachable under the PNC 28-year dictatorship.
In my letter today, I will focus on the accessibility of education for secondary school age children.
There has been the construction of several educational facilities throughout the ten administrative regions of Guyana, hence more children are given the opportunity to gain free education, from the nursery to secondary level, thus providing them with the foundation to pursue their career goals.
The construction of more schools has seen at least 72% of Guyanese children receiving secondary education, a major contrast with only of Guyana’s children who received secondary education during 1968-1991. (Guyana has long awaited this change).
In addition to free education, there has been the implementation of the feeding programme, which offers students a snack, and in some cases, a solid and nutritious meal during school days. An additional allowance is also given to poor families to subsidize the cost of school uniforms for their children. However these will be discussed in a subsequent letter.
Education now more accessible for secondary school children
