THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday presented 103-years-old Mrs. Belle Haywood with a hamper, as part of its community outreach citizens’ project.
The presentation was made by Commander of ‘A’ Division, Assistant Commissioner George Vyphuis who was accompanied, to the centenarian’s Lot 137 Campbellville Housing Scheme, Georgetown home, by a group of male and female ranks.
In the house, Corporal Phillips sang a song and Haywood recited a poem.
Vyphuis said the gift package contained groceries as they wanted to give the elderly citizen only what she can use.
He said, when he learnt that Haywood celebrated a birthday recently, he knew they had to do something for her.
Vyphuis lauded the contribution made by Haywood and the age she has attained, admitting he was surprised that she can still speak and hear clearly.
Haywood, who expressed thanks for the visit and the gift, suffered a stroke in 2000 and has been bedridden since but moves around in a wheelchair.
She can tell stories about her life and is grateful to God for her longevity.
Haywood said her favourite television show is ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ and watches the news on NCN Channel 11.
She bore five children but three died and she is being cared for by her son and her granddaughter, who said she, usually, enjoys a meal of crushed potatoes.
In earlier days, Haywood worked as a domestic and at other jobs but she said she is content with her current life.
