WE are yet again in the rainy season and while there has been much debate about the potential of the drainage system to withstand rainfall, I am particularly pleased about various interventions by the Ministry of Agriculture and weather forecasting by Hydrometeorological Services.
One cannot belie the fact that climate change is affecting many countries including Guyana and more resources have been pumped into various governmental agencies aimed at improving its early response mechanisms and putting measures in place to alleviate flooding. I must say I am much impressed by the Hydromet’s Office and its timely predictions to date. The new Doppler radar system is indeed working and working well.
I am a resident in the Linden area and I have noticed that over the last few years, more resources and finances have been provided to improve the drainage systems in that area. Since the advent of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority on the scene in Linden, there have been many improvements to these systems. I was happy to see excavators and a pontoon working in the Coomacka and Kara Kara area.
While some may argue that there is need for more financing, one must also recognize that climate change is responsible for much discomfort caused in many affected communities. Had it not been for a high tide, there would have been little or no flash flooding in Region Ten. As years go by, Guyana will have to adapt and adapt quickly to rising sea and river levels. It is the reason why I support the mangrove restoration project since it would assist in protecting our sea and river defenses.
What is also noticeable in communities that have suffered from flash flooding is that there is no proper waste disposal resulting in clogged drains and canals. I do believe that citizens of vulnerable communities can help by keeping their drains in and around them clear. We as Guyanese often suffer from the dependency syndrome when we could help ourselves.
In concluding, I would like to join in the call for more citizens’ support to be given to governmental organizations to carry out their day to day duties in order to bring relief to affected areas. Let’s commend them also for a job well done.
