GUYANA’S national squash team, currently competing at the 2010 Caribbean Junior Squash Championships in the Grand Cayman, experienced mixed fortunes on day two of the individual championships on Sunday. Guyana is the first country to guarantee itself a title with the top two seeds in the Girls’ Under 19 category – Keisha Jeffrey and Ashley Khalil living up to their billing by making it to the final, with Khalil narrowly missing her appointment when she was pushed to the limit by Jeffrey’s twin sister Kayla, in the semifinal which went the full five games.
Number two seed in the Under-17 category, Ashley deGroot, fell short of making it another all-Guyana final when she narrowly lost to Kristina Myren of the Cayman Islands in five, leaving number one seed and two-time Caribbean champion Mary Fung-A-Fat to restore order when she takes on Myren in the final which was played yesterday.
Number one seed in the Under-15 category, Victoria Arjoon, will be going for her fourth straight Caribbean title when she takes on number two seed in Trinidad and Tobago’s Charlotte Knaggs in the final.
The boys will be hoping to end their two-year drought in the individual championships, when Jason Ray Khalil and Jean-Claude Jeffrey take on Noah Browne and Nku Patrick in the Under-17 and U-15 finals respectively. The team event is scheduled to get under way at the completion of the individual event, with Guyana defending their Boys’, Girls’ and overall Team titles which they have won for the past two consecutive years.
