The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, in its effort to engage youths in constructive activities during the August vacation, will be hosting annual camps countrywide. These will allow youths to participate in various programmes.
As parts of its annual summer programme, the Burrowes School of Art, which is under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, will be hosting art camps, commencing July 19.
The camps will be held at the school located on Carifesta Avenue, Thomas Lands, and will cater for persons of all ages.
The range of courses offered at the school in the diploma and certificate programmes include graphics, art, history and English, ceramics, textile design, painting, and leather craft.
A two-week camping programme will be held for youths between the ages of nine to 16, and will be leisure-oriented. It will include activities such as art and craft, finger-painting and various games.
In addition, a four-week training programme will be held for children between the ages of six and 12. A fee of $5000 will be charged for persons who are interested.
Administrator and teacher of the institution, Robert Cummings, in a recent interview with the Government Information Agency, stated that the programmes aim to get youths involved in art and creative activities from an early age.
He noted that art is an integral content of the country’s culture, and should be a part of every individual.
Adults will also be able to get involved in art activities, since a five-week programme will be offered at the school and will include arts and craft, painting and leather and textiles creation. A fee of $12,000 will also be charged for persons who are interested in this programme.
The Burrowes School of Art, established shortly after Guyana’s independence, has been one of the longest serving institutions under the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport which provides training for individuals to develop artistic skills.
Each year, students from the school have been actively involved in preparing costumes for the Ministry for activities leading up to Mashramani on February 23.
