– will cater for more students
The country’s health sector has been developing rapidly over the years, as government is continuously constructing and rehabilitating health facilities around the country, as well as equipping them with state-of-the-art equipment and training medical personnel.
Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, on Friday visited the Charles Roza School of Nursing at Linden, Region Ten, as part of an outreach to meet tutors and students of the institution, to discuss issues that affect them and provide solutions.
Some students complained that the number of computer systems was not enough, since there are over 200 students who rely on them for research.
Many of the students were, however, very contented with what the Government has provided for the school.
Minister Ramsaran suggested that the time of availability of the computers should increase to allow more students to access them.
The school is currently under construction, as the Health Ministry is investing in its expansion in order to accommodate more students.
The Ministry has been upgrading the teaching capacity, as the library has been transformed into a resource centre, comprising numerous medical texts books and three new computer systems which are all internet-activated, and other support equipment.
Minister Ramsaran stated that the materials will allow improved learning and teaching environments as well as promote modern technology.
Teaching aids were also sent to the school to assist with demonstration during classes.
Principal tutor at School of Nursing, Hilary Christopher, stated that the new wing will accommodate a practical room, which will allow students to convert theory into practice.
Christopher noted that a new curriculum will soon be implemented, and involving a number of steps, including programme plans, rotations, and curriculum and examination committees.
The latter will help to maintain the standards of teaching as this will subsequently ensure that the best quality of nurses are produced and they will also deliver high quality health care in all regions of the country, Christopher emphasised.
The school facilitates training for students from Region Ten, as well as other regions. There are currently 296 students from various regions, including Regions One, Four, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten. Dormitories are provided for those who reside outside of Region Ten.
The Health Ministry recently provided a refrigerator, stove, tables, chairs and other necessities for the girls’ dormitory, which accommodates 43 students from the hinterland communities.
Government also provides a stipend and uniforms to assist persons from the hinterland who attend the school.
Student of Charles Roza School of Nursing, Yohan London, stated that he is pleased to have a modernised research centre and the computers make research easier.
He added that the school has improved a lot over the years and many other students are benefitting.
London expressed his gratitude to the government and Ministry for the emphasis on improving the Linden community.
