Prime Minister extends condolences to relatives of those killed in Kwakwani accident

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds has offered condolences to relatives and friends of the deceased in this week’s accident in Kwakwani, and has urged motorists to be careful while driving on the nation’s roads.
Following is the Prime Minister’s message:
“As Minister responsible for mining, as Regional Parliamentarian for Region 10 and as a former bauxite worker who has been working with fellow workers of the bauxite communities of the Berbice River since the mid 1970s, I extend heartfelt sympathies to the families, relatives and friends of the bereaved and injured in that horrific accident of yesterday (2010-06-30) on a mine road in Kwakwani.
“As a Minister who has been much involved in the development and maintenance of hinterland roads, and as one who has travelled often along many of them, I recognise that with the very low frequency of encountering other vehicles, people may be easily seduced into acting as if there was no other vehicle to be encountered on the road. I recall that even more  horrific accident, 10 years or more ago, when on the Mabura road a mini bus rushing through an impenetrable thick dust cloud to overtake another vehicle, obviously assuming that there was not a third vehicle coming, ran head on into it and was forced under a timber truck coming from the opposite direction.
“I call on everyone who drives along hinterland roads not to be seduced by the low traffic on those roads but to be constantly aware that there is a chance, though small, of some other vehicle coming around a corner or over a hump.
“I share and join in the pain, the grief and sorrow of the families, relatives and friends of the deceased and injured of the Kwakwani, Hururu and Aroiama communities and hope that we, all Guyanese, will be moved to be more careful in our use of our roads.
