Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) has completed over 30% of its works programme, and though there was a setback in the tendering process, all current projects have been advertised and awarded.
Regional Chairman Julius Faerber told the Government Information Agency that the setback was due to the death of former Regional Executive Officer, Winston Davidson.
Under the capital works programme, with an estimated budget of $231.7M, six bridges valued at $18M will be constructed. Two of these at Meer Zorgen, Wakenaam, and Morasi have already been completed. The Regional Democratic Council also recently tendered for the rehabilitation of the timber bridge at Hermitage, East Bank Essequibo.
Faerber said that of the three roads scheduled for rehabilitation, the two Masjid Streets in Zeeburg and Stewartville are more than 60% complete.
The chairman said that during July/August, rehabilitation of more than eight schools within the region, valued at more than $20M will be done. The Vreed-en-Hoop Canal #2, Bagotville, Jasso, Anna Catherina and La Bagatelle nursery schools will all undergo repairs during this period. The Zeeburg Secondary School will also require minor repairs.
More than 60% of the work has been completed on the extension of the Kawall Primary school, and the state of the sanitary bloc at the Aliki Primary school necessitated repairs.
More than $9M will be spent on furniture for schools across the region.
In the regional health sector, $6M will be spent on the construction of a waiting area at the La Grange Health Center. Health Centres at De Kinderen, Parika, Louisiana and Leguan, will also undergo repairs. Faerber said that tenders for the purchase of operating tables, dental chairs, ultrasound machines, sterilizers and examination beds, to the tune of $15M, were awarded.
Under the region’s drainage and irrigation works, more than $40M will be expended this year to bring relief to farmers across the region. (GINA)
