THE inquest into the November 5, 2003 shooting death of fugitive Charles Grant alias ‘Piggy Mouth’ resumed at New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court last Friday.
Government Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan, whose absence on leave had stalled the inquiry for several weeks, testified that the post mortem examination he performed on the deceased, established that he died of shock and haemorrhage due to gunshot wounds.
After that testimony, the proceedings were, again adjourned until July 12.
Earlier, Coroner Omeaanna Hamilton and a five-member jury were told the victim was killed at Torani Canal, along Canje River, also in Berbice.
Grant, then 30 years old, hailed from North Ruimveldt, Georgetown but was wanted for a series of crimes, including robbery under arms and escaping from lawful custody, among others, all, allegedly, committed in Berbice.
He met his demise in a shootout with a party of policemen who were hunting him in the riverine area.
Grant is alleged to have opened fire on the cops, injuring Police Constable Dharamlall and, after he was fatally wounded, a .32 ‘Colt’ with four live rounds, two 16- gauge cartridges, his reputed wife, Debra Thomas, who hailed from Helena, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara and their 18 months old child were found in their home.
The Police also took possession of an outboard engine and destroyed a nearby half acre field of cannabis (marijuana) plants two and a half feet in height.
