SEVEN beautiful young Guyanese women will, tonight, vie for the first ever ‘Miss Guyana Earth’ title, at a pageant starting 20:00h at the Princess Hotel at Providence. Delegate number one, Marcia Badal, 23, will focus on the issue of ‘Sustainable Logging’ as her platform, under the sponsorship of National Communications Network (NCN).
Delegate number two, Anesha Benjamin, 22, is sponsored by Forest Enterprises Ltd and her platform topic is ‘Responsible Garbage Disposal’.
Twenty-one-year-old Velisha Easton, is delegate number three and her sponsor is Y&J International Cuisine, with ‘Renewable Energy’ being her platform.
Shellon Fraser, 22, is dealing with the issue of ‘Using Plastics Wisely’ as her platform topic. She is delegate number four, sponsored by Lucky Dollar.
Franale Holder, 20, is delegate number five, sponsored by Sunlight International, with her platform being ‘Clean Air’.
Soyini Fraser, delegate number six, is sponsored by UNICOM and the 20-year-old has ‘Reduction of Greenhouse Gases’ as her platform.
Delegate number seven is 19-year-old Kiswana Jefford, sponsored by ‘Double C’, with her platform being ‘Embracing Controlled Logging’.
The pageant was prefaced by a National Dress Competition, recently, the first of a series of scheduled events to promote the environmentally conscious affair.
A second fashion show, dubbed ‘Elements of the Earth’, followed on May 29. Then there was the swimsuit segment on June 13, at the poolside of Princess Hotel at Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Eventually, at least 90 delegates from different countries and territories will compete for the ‘Miss Earth 2010’ title, to be hosted in Vinpearl Land, Nha Trang, Vietnam, on December 4, 2010.
‘Miss Earth 2009’, Larissa Ramos of Brazil, will crown her successor.
‘Miss Earth’ winner serves as the spokesperson for the ‘Miss Earth Foundation’, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental organisations.
