Alleged escapee tells Court of payment to kill

ACTING Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday heard from an attempted murder accused that he was paid to kill a woman.
John Caesar, 27, of Lot 252 Wisrock, Linden, who was refused bail, also on a charge of escaping from lawful custody, said he was told to make the July 4, 2009 attack, on Dhanwantie Poochan in City Mall, look like a robbery.

He did not name the person who hired him but said he and another person received $60,000 to do the killing.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant suffered a fractured skull and some teeth were kicked out of her mouth.
The Prosecutor said Caesar was to be charged indictably but went into hiding since last year.
It was after his arrest pending prosecution that that he escaped from Brickdam Police Station, also in Georgetown, the Prosecutor said.
Caesar pleaded not guilty to the March 11, 2010 escape charge and told the Court that an officer, whom he knew, allowed him to go through the gate.
He said the policeman asked him how much money he can pay for his freedom and, after he gave the officer $15,000, the latter told him to walk, not run, when leaving the precinct.
Caesar was remanded to prison until July 15, when he has to make an appearance in another Court, to which his cases have been transferred.
