Berbice weekend accident…
SECURITY Guard Evelyn Elliott succumbed to an apparent heart attack after viewing the body of her grandson at New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary on Sunday morning. ‘Granny’ as she is fondly called, was attached to RK’s Security Service and was on duty at the hospital when the victims of a two vehicle smash-up, on Number Two Public Road, Corentyne, were taken there for medical attention.
Initially, Elliott was not interested in the identity of the injured persons as her main focus was to control the large crowd gathered at the location.
But, following the departure of the throng, with the confirmed death of Tony Tayloo called Rocky, of Lot 383 Number Two and Suracedyal Kalipersaud known as Imran, 29, of Lot 75 Sheet Anchor, also in Berbice and of Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI), the woman was told that the latter, her grandson had died of his injuries.
She was in disbelief because she had left him at home shortly before she departed for her 12 hours shift commencing at 18:00h on Saturday.
However, she waited until daybreak on Sunday to visit the morgue where her fears were confirmed in the holding room for the deceased.
She, immediately, complained of feeling unwell, then collapsed to the floor. She was rushed to the emergency unit where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Kalipersaud’s mother, Laureen told the Guyana Chronicle that, while Elliott was not her son’s biological grandparent, she had cared for him since birth.
“I never knew she had loved him so much that she also died with him,” the dead man’s mother said of Elliott.
According to her, Elliott had sold a portion of her land to their family 35 years ago but her husband, Khemraj called Roy, allowed the 65-year-old woman, who hailed from North West District, to continue occupying one of the houses on the plot until her demise.
The Kalipersauds informed that, during the years they knew Elliott, no relative ever visited her and she adopted their family as her own.
Khemraj Kalipersaud recalled knowing her 45 years ago when he was about ten years old. His wife acknowledged, too, that, when they were married 35 years ago, Elliott was already amongst the family.
Laureen, reminiscing, said, just last week, Elliott told her to put her National Insurance Scheme (NIS) pension in a joint savings account which would contribute to her funeral when the time comes.
Elliott’s body is awaiting a post mortem examination pending burial tomorrow.
