AFC locked in late leadership crisis talks

THE EXECUTIVE membership of the Alliance For Change (AFC), from both local and overseas chapters, met in a crucial talks yesterday to iron out matters relating to the rotation of its leadership.
However, up to press time, there was no word about the outcome of the meeting, and according to a source close to the Party, the meeting was still in progress.
The buzz from AFC rank-and-file members earlier this week was that the meeting could see a change in the leadership, with current party leader, Raphael Trotman, stepping down and his place being taken by Chairman, Khemraj Ramjattan.
Such a situation, the Chronicle has learnt, has caused a rift within the party’s executive membership, since such an occurrence could see Ramjattan, as party leader, being endorsed as the party’s presidential candidate at both the next delegate’s conference, and the upcoming  general elections.
The party’s constitution stipulates that there ought to be rotation as far as possible of the various senior positions, including those in the national executive, regions and groups. With this rule in place, no member on the party’s executive is allowed to serve in the same position for more than two consecutive terms.
In July last, when the AFC held its 2nd  Delegates’ Convention, Trotman was returned unopposed as the party leader, Ramjattan as Chairman, and Sheila Holder as vice-chairperson.

The trio has already each served the stipulated two consecutive terms, as Party Leader, Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively.
A report carried yesterday in one of the other dailies quoted AFC executive member, Michael Carrington as saying that not only is he interested in running for president, but that the decision as to who should ought to be decided by the party’s rank and file.
