HEAVY early morning rain left the Port Mourant Cricket Club ground in a waterlogged state, forcing the abandonment of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)-organised DIGICEL-sponsored Summer Smash Twenty20 cricket competition yesterday. In the Berbice Free Zone, Upper Corentyne Free Weekend were set to oppose West Berbice Free Talk, while the latter were also scheduled to oppose New Amsterdam Free Credit in the day’s double-header.
Weather permitting, Upper Corentyne Free Weekend will face New Amsterdam Free Credit at the same venue today.
The Demerara Flex Zone of the tournament is scheduled to get under way tomorrow at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground, where the Len Johnson-led Georgetown Flex Text will oppose East Coast’s Flex Check in the first match.
In the second match of the day, East Coast will do battle with East Bank’s Top Up.
The tournament is being sponsored by DIGICEL – the name of the team is attached to the respective area – and is being used as a yardstick to select the Guyana national team that will contest the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional T20 tournament which is scheduled to be held in Barbados, July 22-25.
The final four matches of the tournament will be held in Trinidad and Tobago, July 28 to 31, with the victorious country (once its not Canada), going on to represent the West Indies in the Club Champions League in South Africa later this year. (Calvin Roberts)
