MANSLAUGHTER accused Wazim Mohammed, 23, was remanded to prison, on Wednesday, after he pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking.
He appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at Reliance Court, Canje, where it was alleged that he was cultivating cannabis (marijuana) during a raid that yielded 30 kilogrammes.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said, on June 1, between 06:00 h and 15:30 h, ranks conducted a drug eradication exercise at Gateroy, along Berbice River, where the cultivation was found.
The Prosecutor said four fields, comprising eight acres were destroyed, in addition to 18,000 plants, of heights ranging between two feet and six feet, weighing 22 kilogrammes, five nurseries with 25,000 seedlings and 350 kilogrammes more of marijuana.
Dayaram said Mohammed was in the fields operating a grass cutter and said he was an employee of the owner.
The defendant has to be back in Court on July 5.
Meanwhile, Mohammed is facing a manslaughter indictment for the unlawful killing of Russel Nelson, a 62-year-old pensioner and part-time security guard.
He is to have a retrial because a Berbice Assizes jury failed to reach a verdict in the case on April, 14, 2009.
