Inauguration of loan scheme for single parents today

THE Government and Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) will, today, inaugurate ‘Women of Worth’ (WOW), a financial facility that is intended to transform the lives of many single parents. President Bharrat Jagdeo is expected to grace the ceremony at Guyana International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
The micro-credit scheme will, initially and minimally, provide $500M for a revolving loan system and much attention is expected to focus on those who have successfully completed the training programmes that have been offered by the Government.
The idea is to make money available to the would-be entrepreneurs, so they can either acquire tools to practice the skills learnt or the start-up ingredients for business.
In the context of the entrepreneurial skills training that continues to be on offer and with dedication to mentoring of the intended beneficiaries, the expectations are that the scheme would contribute to transforming the lives of their families, as well.
The Head of state had referred to it in his Independence Anniversary speech, as part of the Government’s investment in the Guyanese people.
He said it is also included in the Government’s initiative to improve the quality of life throughout Guyana.
