THE DDL Topco Juices June 2010 Chess Tournament is set to begin tomorrow at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club, Camp and Hadfield Streets, Georgetown. Registration begins at 14:00 h at the same venue. All male and female chess players, including beginners who are 13 years old or under, are invited to take part. DDL Brand Executive Alexis Crawford re-affirmed her company’s commitment to the development of chess in Guyana as she presented the cheque for sponsorship to the treasurer of the Guyana Chess Federation, Shiv Nandalall, on Wednesday. She noted that chess is small but growing, and observed the chess federation’s perseverance in promoting the growth of the popular board game.
Nandalall expressed gratitude to the DDL official for her company’s sponsorship of the tournament, the second by the company so far this year. He explained that the federation remains firm about spreading chess locally, especially to youths since the game will help them to think ahead for their future.
The tournament consists of seven rounds. Round One begins tomorrow and the seventh and final round will be played on Saturday June, 12. Trophies and cash prizes are at stake. A special trophy will be awarded to the best beginner.
Players are asked to walk with their chess sets and a pen to score their moves. Registration fee is $800 for adults who are not members of the Chess Federation and $600 for juniors who are not members.
