THE Mr Toppers Indoor Championships got off to an exciting start last evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with a clash between defending champions GCC Tigers and their junior counterparts Spartans in the ladies’ division. The Spartans seemed destined for victory when they led at the half by 2-0 through two well-placed penalty corner flicks by Marzana Fiedtkou. The Tigers, however, showed their determination and experience by turning the tables on the Spartans in the second half by launching a comeback, led by a Kerensa Fernandes field goal, followed by two more from Brennette Gordon and Shebiki Baptiste to pull off the 3-2 victory.
In the lone Veterans division clash of the evening that followed, Old Fort’s Gavin Hope and Robert Hussain slotted home a field goal each in the first half which was enough to bury the Hikers by 2-0 at full time.
The men’s second division featured three match-ups beginning with a GCC demolition of the Western Dragons by 5-1.
Five GCC players made the scoreboard in Leonard George, Stuart Gonsalves, Trevon Smith, Stephen Xavier and Shaka Gill while Deon Branford was the lone Dragon to score. The Hikers 1 then eased past the Hikers 2 in their encounter with all goals coming through penalty corners.
Rayon Branford netted the first for the victors in the 5th minute and Jamarj Assanah equalised for the opponents but captain Anton Duke secured the 2-1 win with a goal of his own just three minutes from full time.
The re-emergence of the Police hockey team was a welcome sight although they suffered at the hands of Old Fort ‘B’ by 8 goals to 3. Roy Mendonca ruled the scoreboard with four goals for Old Fort supported by teammates Tony Cole with a double and Dwayne Allen and Compton Dolphin one each. Michael Bourne netted a double for the Police while Trevor Wharton added one more in their losing effort.
The lone first division clash of the night featured tournament favourites Everest Hikers against Old Fort.
Although getting off to a slow start, the Hikers came from behind three times during the match to eventually surge ahead for the 9-4 win.
Tony Cole, the Simon brothers, Aderemi and Ascofu and Chris Low-Koan each scored singles for Old Fort before losing their way to the Hikers in the later minutes. Shane Samuels, Cornell Haywood and captain Devin Munroe all netted doubles for the victorious Hikers while Robert Fernandes, Robert France and Alex Gouveia each added one.
Action continues today from 18:00 h at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with Hikers Ladies facing tournament leaders the GCC Tigers in the opening clash and Old Fort facing off against GCC in the feature 1st division match of the evening. Old Fort and GCC also meet in the lone Veterans fixture of the evening while second division matches are scheduled between Hikers ‘2’ and Dragons, Police against GCC, and Old Fort versus Hikers ‘1’.
