Today culminates another time in our history when we celebrate the liberty and freedom our ancestors struggle for. Indeed, independence is a time when we should reflect on who we are, where we came from and our current status so that we can charter a new course of destiny.
Independence allows us to reminisce on the achievement of our great patriots, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham and Dr Cheddi Jagan who stood in the vanguard and fought relentlessly to free us from colonial bonds. Therefore, the sweat, blood and tears of those who have gone before us should not be taken for granted, but should be valued to the point where we are motivated to develop the rich legacy they have left behind.
It is imperative, that we propel this nation to the place where its full potential can be realised, socially, economically and politically. However, we can only achieve this through co-operative efforts on a united front, as our motto states One People, One Nation, One Destiny.
As we celebrate let us keep in mind, ways in which we can enhance Georgetown our Capital City, so it can reclaim the historic name – The Garden City.
