PPP independence message

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) extends best wishes to all Guyanese on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of Independence.

Since the formation of our Party, sixty years ago, Independence was identified as one of the main goals, our struggle was consistent both at the national and International levels. One can say without any reservation that Independence, while National in character, was the Brain Child of the P.P.P.

Without doubt, this is one of the most significant dates in our nation’s calendar. It marked the formal ending of domination by colonialism in Guyana. It was the beginning of our nation.

For the People’s Progressive Party, Independence was not an end in itself, but an important stage along the road to national and social liberation, which the party had set as its objectives from its inception.

Even in the post-Independence period, the people of Guyana had to wage a relentless struggle for the restoration of democracy which was brutally snatched away by several rigged elections and other infringements on human rights.

Today, Guyana is advancing rapidly to develop a modern state with emphasis on infrastructural, social and human development.

At the social level much more of our resources are going towards education, health, housing, water, etc., all of which make a big contribution to developing the human capital of our country.

Our Low Carbon Development Strategy is attracting greater attention both at the National and International levels to the extent that more resources are available for national development. We are confident that this trend will continue at a higher scale. Our sexual offences laws are modernised to meet with the challenges of the time and compares favourably with many countries of the world.

The PPP calls on all Guyanese to celebrate the 44th anniversary of Independence won through arduous and selfless struggles. At the same time, we urge all to work to overcome the challenges and break the chains of underdevelopment, as those leaders of the independence struggle did in ending colonialism.
