Top Cop reacts to media reports on Ramsaroop investigations

POLICE Commissioner Henry Greene said yesterday that, in relation to allegations that former Alliance for Change (AFC) Chief Executive Officer Peter Ramsaroop was spying on a teenage tenant, detectives are working with what they have to see if there is any evidence to support any sort of charges or anything incriminating. The Top Cop was referring to media reports about hidden cameras being found in the apartment that Ramsaroop had rented to Nicole Ming, 19.
He spoke to reporters shortly after a ceremony, at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, where Japarts made a presentation to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Greene said, so far, the Police have some devices that were lodged after the search conducted at Ramsaroop’s premises and they are examining the hard drives to see what will come out of them.
Asked why the Police released copies of the statements by both Ramsaroop and Ming, the Commissioner maintained that the action was not political in any way but it was simply to clarify doubts.
“You know, when certain situations arise, I don’t know why they say it is political …that’s why a search was done and we decided to let the public see what we have,” he offered.
Greene said the documents were made public for all to see and it is easier, as they  contained nothing incriminating but were just to refute what people were saying.
Responding to questions about Ramsaroop’s departure from Guyana on Wednesday, the Commissioner said that permission was given, by the Court, for him to travel overseas and, at no time, did the Police write to the airline.
Greene said no such letter originated from his office.
He said Ramsaroop did approach the Police but they did not respond to his request and he, later, went to Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang, who allowed him to leave the country.
“I have no fears that he will return… if he did nothing, then he has nothing to fear,” Greene declared.
Police, acting on information received, on Tuesday secured a warrant and executed a search at the Lot 261 Forshaw and New Garden Streets, Queenstown property owned by Ramsaroop, also in the city, where Ming lived.
Police also searched Ramsaroop’s Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara office, from where they took away two computer hard drives.
A digital video recorder was also retrieved from his house but Ramsaroop has denied all the allegations and claimed he previously used the Ming apartment as an office for employees and installed cameras, all of which he did not remove when he rented it to her.
Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Clement Rohee has also refuted suggestions that the Monday raid on Ramsaroop’s Queenstown place was politically motivated in any way.
According to him, the Police were just doing their job and acted in accordance with the law.
