Warren ‘40’ McKay tops second stage
WARREN ‘40’ McKay was the man in charge at the end of the 60.4 mile-long second stage as the throng of cyclists made their way from Rosignol to Carifesta Avenue yesterday in the heated contest that is the National Sports Commission’s 28th annual Three-Stage Cycle Race. McKay who clocked 2:33:09 pulled off his victory after previously placing second behind Godfrey Pollydore in the first stage which ran from Corriverton to New Amsterdam covering a total of 46.6 miles.
He will be going into today’s third and final stage ahead of the rest of the competitors as his overall time of 4:20:32 for yesterday’s two stages seats him in first place.
Raymond Newton was McKay’s closest pursuer and he also clocked a time of 2:33:09 to finish off the first two stages in fourth place overall with his combined time of 4:21:55 for the two stages. Surinamese Murvin Aruinjo junior was the third place finisher in the second stage and he also clocked 2:33:09 to seat himself in second place with his overall time of 4:20:44 going into today’s final stage.
Rounding out the final four was Geron Williams who finished one position better in the second stage than he did in the first stage. Williams also finished in a time of 2:33:09 which when combined with his performance in the first stage puts him in third place with his overall time being 4:20:46 going into tomorrow’s stage.
The defending champion Alonzo Greaves who was present in the top three finishers of the first stage finished the second stage way into the first group of riders to complete the course. Greaves’ performances set him as the fifth place competitor overall with his overall time being 4:23:23.
Simon Clarke with his overall time of 4:23:25, Raj Seepersaud with his overall time of 4:23:28 and Godfrey Pollydore, who won the first stage with his overall time of 4:24:20 round out the top eight overall ranked competitors in respect of that order.
